A Sunday State of the Blog Post Starring Joe Carter

Welcome and good evening Trollites! I wanted to thank everyone for checking out, following and wishing me well with my newest venture, Leading Off, a blog all about Brian Roberts, the All Star second baseman of the Baltimore Orioles. I decided to put together a Troll post to answer some questions I have recieved all at once. I realized quickly that there are a lot of words here, so I called upon my Joe Carter collection to break up the text. Several of my awesome readers have written me this week asking if I received the packages that you sent me. I have not gone to the Post Office in over a week. My accident slowed me down, but not having a car has made things very difficult for me in terms of getting around. I will be going to the Post Office on Tuesday to ship the remaining packages I have promised-I have stuff ready for Drew’s Cards, Phungo, Cobb and Halladay, White Sox cards and a few others. I can’t wait to see all of the awesome stuff that I (hopefully) have waiting for me. I don’t think I have ever gone this long without checking the box. I am going to try and catch up on a lot of things today and tomorrow. My post queue is getting empty and I am way behind on trade posts. I opened up some packages that I have had for over a month and even got some of the contents scanned. Some of the packages I will be working on posting have come from Omega Wax, Padrographs, Condition Poor, Heritage Blog, Field of Cards, Thoughts and Sox, Rhubarb Runner and several others. Of course I still have bunches of cards from Wicked Ortega, Cobb and Halladay, Play at the Plate, Carl Crawford Cards, JD Wild, Democratic Roadkill and Cards on Cards that I received months ago and still haven’t posted. I also have 3 AWESOME team sets from various years of the Durham Bulls-the AAA club of the Rays. I know one of them came from CCC, but I can’t recall who sent me the other two. Please remind me on that… I have also recieved a few surprise TTMs that I had long since given up on. I guess I just wanted to touch base with everyone and tell you all that I have a lot of posting planned. Of course I have about 180 packs to rip for the next group break, plus my responsibilities to A Pack to be Named Later where I will be posting many of those packs PLUS I have a number of 3 from 3 posts to do. Spring Training is about to begin and I want to be there taking pictures and doing some interviews. I have interviews done and awaiting posting with several former Negro League players, a Women’s Professional Baseball League player and several stars from the sixties. As I unveiled last night there is a new blog about Brian Roberts and I plan on adding separate pages for Jonny Gomes and Danny Tartabull as well. The 1978 Topps blog will be returning to its regular programming very shortly, too. I have a number of great cards from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and beyond lined up to be Collective Troll Card of the Day. I have more scans and opinions from 2010 Topps and a number of great trades in the works. Our first roller derby bout of the season is next Sunday and derby will start to take up A LOT of my time once again. While I am announcing I don’t have a whole bunch of time to take pictures, but I will try and feature a couple from each bout. My financial issues have caused me to stop working on my 1959 Topps set (I had to sell Bob Gibson and Harmon Killebrew) and I have shifted the 1965 and 1969 sets to the back burner for now, but I still plan on writing about the 1978 and ’79 sets, plus the Fleer sets of the early sixties and eighties, 1951 Bowman, 1964 Topps Giants and 1887 Allen and Ginter Champions plus any oddball and tobacco cards I can get my hands on. I still want to get aggressive on my Trifecta Collection (inspired by Drews Cards), getting a rookie card, relic and autographed card of many of my favorite players who I don’t super collect. My current most wanted list for relic cards includes: Billy Pierce, Danny Tartabull, Roberto Clemente, Larry Doby, Quinton McCracken, Ben Grieve, Ben Zobrist, Willie Stargell, Sandy Koufax, Lou Brock, Maury Wills, Andrew McCutchen, Roy Sievers, Monte Irvin, Frank Robinson, Vada Pinson, Chico Carrasquel, Tim Raines, Junior Gilliam, Hank Thompson, Frank Howard, Tony Oliva, Rod Carew, Lastings Milledge, Adam Jones, Albert Belle, Fred McGriff, Wade Boggs, Ray Durham, Willie Wilson, Minnie Minoso, Bert Blyleven, Wade Davis, Dave Parker, Bill Mazeroski, Dick Bosman, Steve Carlton and Dave Winfield (and others). I have rookie cards of MOST of those guys and autographs, too, just hoping to get my hands on relic cards. I wanted to end this state of the blog post with some cards, or at least A card. This one came to me from Hackenbush of the Can’t Have Too Many Cards blog. I had posted my list of relics I was seeking, like the list above and he came through with an offer of this awesome bat card of one of my favorite players of all time, Joe Carter. He became a national name after his heroic homer for the Blue Jays in the 1993 World Series, but I had been a fan of his long before that. As a kid I met him at a signing while he was still a member of the Cleveland Indians. He had no line and took about 5 minutes to talk baseball with EVERY one who came to him for his autograph. It was one of the best autograph experiences of my childhood and because of that he won a fan for life. Of course it didn’t hurt that he was one of the top run producers of his era either. I have since had the opportunity to meet him several times and each time I bring up that time in the 80s that he made a young kids day. He is one of the few people whose autographs I got as a child that I interviewed as an adult AND I had the chance to meet him once more beyond that. My former mother-in-law Vickii was Joe Carter’s elementary school teacher for many years in Oklahoma City where he grew up. After his retirement he joined her (and me) for dinner at her house. He was that kind of awesome and appreciative individual. Fortunately my Mom saved the pic that he had signed for me about 25 years ago-it is the image at the top of this post. He spelled my name wrong, so I have never displayed it, but I will never forget that day. Thanks to CHtMC, I now have a relic to go with it and have another complete Trifecta. The card is from 2005 Topps Pristine, number TT-JC from the Title Threads insert series. The back of the card mentions his famous game 6 walk-off homerun in the 1993 World Series. It was only the second walk off homer in WS history. The front of the card touts Carter and the Blue Jays as 1993 World Series Champions and has a nice 1” square slice of bat on it. Aside from his famous walk-off Carter hit 5 other homers in the postseason and 396 (49th All Time) in the regular season. He was a five time All Star and 2-time Silver Slugger. He led the AL in RBI in 1986 and drove in 1445 runs over his 16-year career. He topped the 100-RBI plateau in 10 of those seasons. You can read Joe Carter’s complete career statistic sheet at Baseball Reference HERE. Thanks to everyone who took the time to read my State of the Blog statement and thanks to Can’t Have Too Many Cards for sharing this awesome Joe Carter card with me. PLEASE check out his amazing blog. Hackenbush is one of the few who posts more than I do AND his stuff is good! As soon as I click “publish post” I will start working on the next one… Oh, before anyone asks, this is a one-time tribute and I will NOT be starting a Joe Carter blog...Oh, I think this could qualify as a Valentines Day post for Blue Jays fans. Phillies fans, not so much. Go Rays! Troll out.

An Update Plus Pack #26 of 1997 Pinnacle X Press!

There are 12 teams left for the next break. If all the slots fill up, like last time, all 118 packs featured HERE will be divided up for it (and probably a few more). The slots don’t have a monetary value, you can trade your way in with Rays jerseys, autographs, cards off of my want list, 2009 Topps Heritage SPs, cards from the 50’s or 60’s-anything you think I will like, just email me an offer…
Trying to finish up this break, so here we go with pack #26 of 1997 Pinnacle X Press:
#2 Andy Pettitte New York Yankees (It is a shocker to pull a pitcher out of this product… I think there is one pitcher to 12 hitters. I looked up Pettitte’s career numbers as soon as I yanked this one. The first surprise was not only has AP never sniffed a Cy Young, he has only been an All Star twice. He won 21 games in 1996, in the thick of the juiced ball/juiced player era… His record in the postseason is more than an entire season for most. He is 18-9 in 40 starts including 8 World Series. Wow. His 229 wins are 63rd All Time and his .629 winning percentage is 53rd All Time. He won 14 games for the Yankees last year in the regular season and he was 4-0 in the postseason. At 37 years old, I think he still has a few good years in him)
#20 Rafael Palmeiro Baltimore Orioles (A lot of people have a lot of opinions about Palmeiro-mine is that dude could MASH! 39 bombs and 142 ribs in ’96. You can say the juice bought him all the long balls, but you don’t get 3000 hits in a needle… Question: Are all left handed first basemen required to have a porn star mustache? Are they still or did that rule apply from the 70’s to the 90’s?)
#115 Joe Carter Toronto Blue Jays (I have searched and searched and I can’t find the 1984 Donruss Carter that I was sure I had-anybody got an extra? Carter joined the power party in ’96 himself with 30 bombs and 107 RBI)
#46 Bernie Williams New York Yankees (Did anyone in the AL NOT drive in 100 runs in ’96? Bernie brought home 102… When he hung up his cleats, he picked up a guitar. I saw him perform in Sarasota in November, the guy can pick it!)
#101 Rondell White Montreal Expos (Finally a human! Rondell had a respectable 15 year career, topped 20 homers a few times, was an All Star, but he never put up those sick and crazy triple crown numbers that nearly everyone else in this pack did)
#??? Swing for the Fences Game Card -4
#125 Kevin Orie Chicago Cubs (Orie was the Cubs first rounder in 1993… He made it to the Show in 1997 and had the best year of his short MLB career. He batted .275 with 8 homers and 44 RBI-all career bests. He was named on a ballot for Rookie of the Year, finishing 11th the year that Scott Rolen won it. He broke in with the Cubs, went to the Marlins and returned to the Cubs. He would actually go to the Marlins organization once more and return to the Cubs again. He spent 12 years in the minors with 10 different organizations… He made it back to Chicago briefly in 2002 and finally gave up in ’06)
#143 Mark McGwire Oakland A’s Peak Performers (Perhaps “Peak Performance Enhancer” would be a more appropriate subset title for this card…)
Another pack down… If you haven’t signed up for the next rip yet, please think about doing so. There are about 12 open spots. The break will be 50 packs UNLESS every spot is filled, then it will be around 130 packs. If you are already in and paid up, then turn on your salesperson charm and get these last slots filled up. If you are interested, please email me at bacontowne at yahoo dot com. Stay tuned, I aint gonna sleep until I finish at least one box today… Go Rays! Troll out.

Rolling Forward-Pack #16 of 1993 Stadium Club-Way Better than the Last Pack and Featuring A Bunch of Scans!

Moving right along with pack number 16 of 1993 Stadium Club…
I will start by saying that there are only 149 different cards on the checklist for series 3 of 1993 Stadium Club. This box will yield 336 cards, so there are bound to be a lot of doubles. The last few packs have had a bunch of dupes. This one is no different. Here we go!
#707 Ken Griffey Jr. Seattle Mariners (I doubt anyone is going to complain about getting dupes of the Kid. Has anyone taken the Mariners for the next break yet? Remember they had Griffey, Martinez and Randy Johnson in the mid-90s)
#699 Kevin Reimer Milwaukee Brewers (Reimer hit 20 homers for Texas in ’91. He hit 13 for the Brew Crew in ’93, but never saw the leagues again)
#637 Tom Henke Texas Rangers (The Terminator makes another appearance)
#722 Kevin Young Pittsburgh Pirates (In 1999 Young batted .298 with 26 homers, 22 steals, 41 doubles and 106 RBI for the Bucs)
#705 David Hulse Texas Rangers
#749 Joe Carter MEMBERS CHOICE Toronto Blue Jays (The back of the card mentions that Carter told his teammates after Game 6 of the ALCS that they could ride his shoulders to the pennant, and they did) #692 David Hulse Florida Marlins
#744 Guillermo Velasquez San Diego Padres
#743 Charlie Hayes Colorado Rockies
#627 Paul Molitor Toronto Blue Jays (Always awesome to pull a Hall of Famer… The Ignitor batted .500 with 2 homers and 8 RBI while winning his second World Series in 1993)
#646 Joe Magrane St Louis Cardinals
#640 Dave Martinez San Francisco Giants (Martinez was just a platoon outfielder with the Giants, but in a few years he would bat over 300 in 2 straight years for the White Sox and in 1998 he would be an original Devil Ray)
#665 Greg Maddux Atlanta Braves (In ’93 Maddux won a Gold Glove and the NL Cy Young, but didn’t make the All Star team… Go figure)
#663 Mike Moore Detroit Tigers (Moore was an All Star with Oakland in 1989 and won the World Series… in 1993 he was 13-9 for the Tigers)
#650 Tom Glavine Atlanta Braves (How many Braves pitchers can we have in one pack? Glavine led the NL in wins for the third straight year in ’93, plus he was an All Star, but he finished 3rd in the Cy Young vote behind Maddux and Bill Swift of the Giants)
#650 David Cone Kansas City Royals (Coney could battle it out with Tom Henke for 3rd best pitcher in this pack. Conehead won 11 games for the Royals in ’93, but he won the AL Cy Young the following year for KC when he was 16-5 in that strike shortened season)
#681 Troy Percival California Angels (I think this is the 5th copy of Percy’s rookie card. I wonder if somebody is gonna get bipped with this)
#708 Steve Bedrosian Atlanta Braves (3 Braves pitchers in one pack?)
Okay, this pack beats the heck out of the last one. A Hall of Famer helps, plus Griffey, Maddux and Glavine. Maybe the best pack of this brand so far… 8 more to go. Troll out!

Ripping Up some 1994 Pinnacle, Pack 18 (of 24)

As you can see creativity in these titles is done... Moving right along with the 1994 Pinnacle, here is pack #18-the end is near!
#366 Eric Plunk Cleveland Indians (Plunk had a respectable career, he was 72-58 in 714 games over 14 seasons AND he was traded for Rickey Henderson TWICE)
#531 Darrin Jackson Chicago White Sox
#309 Scott Kamieniecki New York Yankees
#345 Joe Carter Toronto Blue Jays (This is one of my favorite cards ever and not just because I am a Joe Carter fan… Look at the pic, Carter is making a GREAT catch at the wall, but there is a Yankee fan in the front row (thrusting at the fence) wearing a tee shirt with Babe Ruth or Melky Cabrera on it with a ball on his hat. Just look at the picture. Awesome!) #412 Mark Hutton New York Yankees
#432 Brian Anderson MUSEUM COLLECTION California Angels (Awesome! Brian is a do everything guy in the Rays organization… A little coaching, a little announcing, some play by play, shagging fly balls, bullpen catcher-whatever)
#386 Rich Amaral Seattle Mariners
#456 Sean Berry Montreal Expos
#513 Will Clark Texas Rangers (Will the Thrill just keeps on popping up, everywhere!)
#443 John Flaherty Boston Red Sox (The Devil Rays original backstop)
#426 Albie Lopez Cleveland Indians (Speaking of Devil Rays…)
#520 Julio Franco Chicago White Sox (Wow, Julio Franco was just a 35-year-old young pup in ’94. He won the Silver Slugger Award for DH in ’94 after batting .319 with 20 homers and 98 RBI. He already had 4 as a second baseman which ties him for 2nd most All Time behind Ryno. I really would have liked to see Franco play at 50)
#315 Robby Thompson San Francisco Giants (Robby T pulled off the Trifecta in ’93-he was an All Star and won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger at 2nd base for the Giants)
Okay, that’s another rip down… We are getting close-I still don’t think I will be done by tomorrow night, but I am gonna keep on trying! Oh, by the way, this is my 350th post, woo hoo! Troll out!

1993 Stadium Club-Rippin' Pack #5!

I decided to switch back to Stadium Club for a few before I tear into the Pinnacle Series Two. Here is what we got:
#697 Benji Gil Texas Rangers
#646 Joe Magrane ST LOUIS CARDINALS
#735 Mitch Webster LA Dodgers
#631 Greg Gagne KC Royals
#717 Paul O’Neill New York Yankees
#610 Charlie Hough Florida Marlins (There’s something I really like about age defying knuckleballers… Hough had just reached his 200th victory in ’92 right before he came to Florida as their Inaugural Ace and topped 200 innings at 45 years of age. The back shows his rookie from 1972 Topps-the earliest rookie card of any player in the set so far…)
#666 Harold Baines Baltimore Orioles (is that card # why the HOF voters won’t give Baines any love?
#605 Carlos Quintana Boston Red Sox
#729 Jose Lind Kansas City Royals
#604 Bryan Harvey Florida Marlins
#749 Joe Carter MEMBERS CHOICE Toronto Blue Jays
#700 Andy Ashby Colorado Rockies
#683 Jim Converse RC Seattle Mariners
#685 Greg Gohr RC Detroit Tigers
I think this is the first pack with no Braves or Rockies in it, perhaps we are beginning to find some team variety… Stay tuned, many more packs to rip…troll out.
