A One-Card Post - Yes, It is Carl Crawford...

It’s Sunday and I am enjoying my first day off so far this month. My wife is out with her best friend. One of my friends called and asked if I wanted his Rays tickets for today, but wifey has the car so I am “organizing” my cards. This means there are thousands of cards all over the floor. I have about 12 posts half written or partially scanned for 4 different blogs. I haven’t posted anything all day, so here is a quick one-card post. It’s a favorite card of mine, so it’s okay. It comes from 2009 Topps Updates and Highlights and the highlight is the game that Carl Crawford had on May 3, 2009. I was glued to my TV set for every single pitch of that one. James Shields earned his third win of the season beating Brad Penny. Carl Crawford was on base 5 times in 5 plate appearances going 4 for 4 with a walk. He drove in a run and scored 2 more and oh yeah, he also stole 6 bases!!! That is a record folks. Actually it tied a record. Otis Nixon and Eric Young Sr. did it. Hall of Famer Eddie Collins did it too. Collins actually did it twice, in the same season, actually in the same month - September of 1912. The official record is 7 steals in one game. Hall of Famer Sliding’ Billy Hamilton did it 1894. He also batted .404 that year and stole 98 bases. Six is considered the modern record however. The back of the card points out that Crawford and Eddie Collins were the only 2 to steal six while having 4 hits in the game as well. Crawford’s six steals gave him 17 for the season. Jacoby Ellsbury, who would lead the AL in steals in 2009, was thrown out in his lone stolen base attempt. All of Crawford’s steals came against Sox Captain Jason Varitek. The card is #UH179 in the set. I don’t know for sure, but I really hope the picture on the front is from that game. Being under that assumption, this is one of my favorite cards. This now the third version I own of it. The regular base, the gold #ed to 2009 and now the BLACK version. Mine is numbered 42/58. I bought this card for myself as an early Father’s Day gift. I have “black Crawford Topps” as a “saved search” on an auction site, but seldom get an alert. When I saw this one for auction, I HAD to have it. Now if I could just find the platinum version I could finally complete a Crawford Quadrifecta. Thanks for reading! Go Rays! Troll out.

THE TROLL IS BACK and bringing The Joy of a Completed Page!

I am back people...
And I am here to show off another completed page, this one comes from 2009 Topps Updates and Highlights. I had exactly zero finished pages in the U and H binder, but I just received a package from Jeremy from No One’s Gonna Read This Blog which included 23 cards I needed for the set and I put them to good use and finished off 12 different pages. Considering there are only 37 pages in the binder, I am doing pretty good… If you have any doubles from this series, you can find my want list right HERE. On that topic, I finally got my hands on 2010 Topps and will post on them later tonight. By the by, the Troll is back! I am a little worse for wear, battered and bruised and I am rolling without a car, but I am alive and blogging again. Thanks to EGNJ for filling in and emptying out the queue and keeping the Collective Troll and Nitty Gritty Blogs alive. Huge thanks to Cards on Cards and No Ones Gonna Read This Blog for hooking it up U and H style! Go Rays! Troll is back and he is out!

2009 Topps Updates Ripfest Part One!

As always I am in a huge hurry. It was a crazy busy day for this Troll, but I got everything done that I needed to do and before I went to work I rewarded myself with some packs of 2009 Topps Updates. I have been dying for these to come out and the hobby shop still hasn’t got its boxes, nor has Target, but I stopped at Wal Mart today and they had blasters and loose packs. I didn’t fall for the blaster gag this time, but did hook up with 31 loose packs! I only had time to rip half of them; the other half will come after work. I did find my first card of Jonny Gomes in a Reds uniform and I definitely want every variation of this one that is out there! I love seeing everyone in their current uniforms and finding this Rickey Henderson card was pretty awesome! I didn't chase series 1 or 2. I bought a ton, but traded almost everything I pulled. I will probably go back and try and build them later, but this set I will be on from the start! I always loved getting the traded sets and these updates and highlights sets really have me sucked in, plus this design and the photography totally rock! I pulled three propaganda poster cards and they are just as awesome as I had hoped. Definitely NEED the Longoria, these ones are on the block if anyone is interested. I do wonder why Adrian Gonzalez has a Brewers logo in the corner. I am confused. Does this go in the stack for Roll out the Barrel or Punk Rock Paint or Padrographs? Two other cards that made me really scratch my head are rookies of Derek Holland and Mark Melancon. I guess their names are sort of there, but there is no foil there. They both came out of the same pack, too. Bizarre! They don’t have names on the front! What is up with that Topps? Are these errors? Were they corrected? Has anyone else pulled cards like this? I was glad to finally get my paws on these, I liked series 1, and loved series two and updates are awesome! I wish I didn’t have to rush off to work… For now, I will sign off with Brooks Robinson, Legends of the Game. I will probably be on the hunt for more of these tomorrow, I love 'em!!! Go Rays! Troll out.
