Thursday Afternoon Odds and Ends...

Okay, here are a few Thursday afternoon odds and ends from the Troll… First off I need to do my civic duty as a blogger and pimp the fantastic contest over at Hey That’s Mine! Hosted by blogger and card creator Big D. You can check out the contest HERE, but I will give you a quick synopsis. Big D makes custom one of a kind cards. I am really lucky that I own two of these already, including this one of super-lefty David Price who is finally having the season that he was supposed to have last year. Since Big D made me two one of a kind cards AND since it isn't completely out of the question that Price and Longoria could win Cy Young and MVP Awards this year, I am posting my other Big D custom card of Longo. These are NOT up for trade... Okay, to enter the contest you simply have to comment with your name and which player you would like to have a custom card of. The possibilities are endless, but you do have to supply Big D with an image. Okay, go there and enter the contest, tell him the Troll sent you, yadda yadda yadda… While I am pimping links I want to encourage you to check out a Pack to be Named Later. I just posted a pack that you can find HERE.
You should follow it and check it out daily though. If you are involved in the long overdue Collective Troll box and pack break, you should definitely check it out to see what you are getting. I will post the list soon of who has what team. For those of you who read this post on 1993 Donruss Masters-I got curious and opened 3 more packs.
The first two yielded Jose Canseco and Gary Sheffield, but I got this sweet Ryno in the third pack. Okay, I have been very lucky in the getting great stuff in the mail department lately so I have a TON of great cards to post. I am also buying cards here and there for my personal collections of Danny Tartabull, Jared Sandberg and Buck O’Neil. My newest one is this 1995 Pinnacle Museum Collection card of Danny Tartabull. The Yankees uniform nearly ruins it, but I really like Dufex cards, so I am happy with it. Plus I got it, shipping included for $1.25. Sweet. For those of you following my progress with collecting the 1965 Topps set I have restarted that journey after losing it all. I finished my first page today thanks to my local card shop, my awesome readers and a few really cheap auctions, here it is: With card #25 or 72 I can finish off two more pages. Right now I am working on 10 pages at a time so I am focused on cards #1-90; I am 65% of the way there. My weakest spot is League Leaders 1-9 right now cuz these can be a bit pricy. That’s all for now, I am gonna try and pull off a Nitty Gritty post in the 15 minutes I have before work. Thanks for reading. Check out Big D’s Custom Contest. Go Rays! Troll out.

The Joy of a Competed Page-Yo Mama Edition

This Joy of a Completed Page segment is brought to you by Peterson from the Sign Here and Here blog. He hooked me up with a ton of stuff including the Duke Snider and Frank Robinson cards to finish off this page. I hope to post all of the Rays goodness he shipped my way soon. For now, enjoy a reprinted sample from each year from 1952-1960. I would LOVE to own any one of these amazing cards. I kinda wish that Topps had included Clemente and Aaron in this, but that is my only complaint. This filled page looks GOOD! Thanks so much to Peterson and everyone else who helped me fill this one up. My want lists for this set are up to date. For this set, I still need these cards: 13,14,20,24,27,29,31,37,39,42,43,44,51,52,54,55,56 and 57. #13 and 14 would be my Most Wanted as that would fill up another awesome page. Get in touch if you can help a Troll out. Don’t forget to check out a Pack to be Named Later. I have a ton of wax I will be ripping over there. Today’s pack is 1985 Topps Super. They are big! Oh, as a reminder. All of the stuff I rip on a PTBNL goes into the team piles for the group break, so you should really check it out. Go Rays! Troll out.

Congrats to Dallas Braden and Some More Overdue Stuff...

I didn't get to watch the game, I wish I did. Watching a perfect game is unforgettable even when your team is on the losing end. No Rays pitcher has ever thrown a no-hitter before never mind a perfect game. I would love to see that someday, but for now I am pretty happy that my team has the best record in baseball. As long as the Rays are winning more often than they lose, I don't really care if they get blanked every now and then... So a huge congrats to Dallas Braden and the Oakland A's. I don't think anyone expected the A's to be sitting in second place in the West at this point, I am really happy for the team. I love seeing over-hyped teams lose, but I love to see the underdog rise up. Congrats to Oakland and Dallas both!

Onto a different topic... An update for those who are in for my long-overdue group box break. It was supposed to be "Spring Break-Packs Gone Wild", but the spring is passed and I missed it. I am not going to make excuses, but I will apologize. I feel horrible about this and it is weighing heavy on me. Time has been hard to come by for me. The break WILL happen. It will start this week. An extra push came this weekend when I found this collection on my doorstep when I got home from work on Saturday. On top of the hundreds of packs already slotted for the break, I think we can add a few more... The plan remains to one of each for A Pack to be Named Later. I still plan on doing that. Many of these new packs are non-sports, football, basketball and soccer. These will have to be claimed when I post the breaks of each. Anyway, keep on checking back with A Pack to be Named Later and I think you will see some posts from your friend the Troll. Thanks to Mission Mary Position, Kelly and Frank, y'all rawk!!! Go Rays! troll out.

Permission to Freak Out OR Pack #15 of 1994 Pinnacle Series 2

Okay, I have officially hit anxiety attack time… I had totally spaced about school starting this week. I attended my first class today at 8 o’clock in the freaking morning! This might seem like nothing to most of you, but I work to 6 AM, so its pretty early because it means I have be up for over 24 hours and I am a little sleepy and very crabby and not quite ready to learn. The class is calculus. I have been putting off taking this for a while, but I figured that it was bullet biting time so I am gonna do it. During our first lecture, the instructor, Dr. R said this will probably be the toughest class any of you will ever take and I don’t expect more than 30% of you to pass this class. Wow, nothing like a little pep talk on the first day… He gave us homework, too, which also would not have been a huge deal except that I forgot about classes starting and I haven’t bought the stoopid 200 dollar text book yet. Anyway, this all factors into my blog writing because I have a self imposed deadline of Wednesday to finish the group break. I still plan on trying to do it, but the player descriptions are gonna get REALLY short. Sorry. I will plan better on the next one. Speaking of that, here are the teams that have been taken. The Blue Jays (Duane), Rangers (Brian), Red Sox (Adam E), Cubs (Paul), Yankees (Nico), Brewers (Ed), the Orioles (Ryan) and the Cardinals (Madding). That leaves the Braves, Mariners White Sox, Indians, Dodgers, Royals, Twins, Giants, Marlins, A’s and a whole bunch of other teams wide open. It will be mid 90s again so the Rays and D-Backs wont be available. I would like to get a few fresh faces in here… Okay, here we go with pack #15 of 1994 Pinnacle Series 2. I will probably post one of these at A Pack to be Named Later-a super amazing site that I highly recommend and am honored to be a part of. Please take a moment and go follow that amazing blog! Okay, here we go!
#433 Matt Brunson Detroit Tigers (Brunson’s Dad was Larry Brunson and that was enough I guess for the Tigers to use the 9th overall pick in the 1993 draft to take him out of high school. I think they dropped a million or so to get him to sign… Some notables who were still available included Derek Lee and Torii Hunter. Good scouting Detroit!)
#409 Brian Williams Houston Astros
#397 Rob Butler Toronto Blue Jays (Rob is the brother of Rich Butler (former D-Ray) and had a career about the same length)
#535 James Mouton Houston Astros (James is the brother of Lyle Mouton, but in this case James had slightly more success… He stole 20+ bags 3 years straight. I said slightly)
#302 Edgar Martinez Seattle Mariners (see really good hitters who didn’t play the field and are not in the Hall of Fame. Edgar had pretty bad years in ’93 and ’94 but came back to hit .356 in ’95. It would be the first of 7 consecutive years batting over .306) #474 Greg Colbrunn Florida Marlins
#463 Mike Bordick Oakland A’s
#527 Chan Ho Park Los Angeles Dodgers (Park was just a 21 year old rookie who only pitched 4 innings back in ’94, but he’s still pitching…)
#337 Jose Mesa Cleveland Indians (Mesa became the Indians closer in 1995 and led the AL with 46 saves and finished 2nd in Cy Young voting behind Randy Johnson)
#329 Bob Welch Oakland A’s (1994 was the final year of a fine career for Mr. Bob Welch, the 1990 Cy Young Award winner was victorious in 211 (90th) games over his 17 year career)
#282 Chad Curtis California Angels
#485 Randy Milligan Montreal Expos
#425 Tripp Cromer St Louis Cardinals (Of the famous Cromer baseball family)
Okay, another pack down… These might get even shorter as I really need to try and hurry up a little more. I should be able to post at least 3 more packs today and might even touch on the AMAZING package I received this weekend from Adam E over at Thoughts and Sox. Oh speaking of new blogs (were we?) Troy, the famed Rockies collector has just started up a blog, it is called the Card Nut-go check it out please! Troll out.
