Wednesday Night Games Part 2 of 2, Congratulations Jonny Gomes!!!

More from Wednesday night… While I was busy watching Dennis Springer blow another game for the Rays, one game that I missed was the Reds playing the Astros. Both teams are way out of the playoff picture, but they (along with the Brew Crew) are battling for 3rd place in the NL Central and a respectable finish to the season. With a win, Houston would have moved into 3rd place. Well, even though Jeff Keppinger was 3-4 for the ‘Stros and had his first career multi-homer game (2 solo shots), the Reds won this game 6 to 5. Why would I care about this game? Aside from being a fan of Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto and Scott Rolen, I am a bigger fan of the Reds starting right fielder that night. Yes, Mr. Jonny Gomes occupied the 6th spot in the batting order and got the start in right. He responded by swatting his 20th homer of the season. Not too shabby for a guy who didn’t have a team at the beginning of the year, who barely got a spring training invite and started the year in AAA. Not bad for a guy who didn’t get called up till late May and hit his first homer on June 12th. Jonny Gomes has reached the 20 homer mark for the 3rd time in his career and needed only 258 at bats to get there. Oh, and he dedicated the blast to Dayton Daily News beat writer Hal McCoy who was retiring after 37 years of covering baseball. Class act. He even signed the bat for Mr. McCoy and gave it to him as a gift after the game. Way to go Jonny! Here’s to many more. Go Jonny Go! Troll out.
Endnote: I will be posting my player collection pages next week. There will be a page for Gomes, Crawford, Bartlett and Pat Neshek. These will have a full list of ALL the cards that I own of that particular player and should make trading easier. Congratulations again to Jonny Gomes!

  1. Why, in the name of all that is holy, is Gomes no longer in a Rays uni? I'm not one to rip on players or production, but good Lord, wouldn't Gomes's bat have been a welcome presence in the lineup this year?

  2. It makes zero sense to me CCC. He has produced far more than any of the Rays right fielders or DH and he makes the league minimum and he was a fan favorite. I swear, I've more fans with Gomes signs than for any other player. I still don't get it. I am glad that he didn't give up when they non-tendered him though. Maybe he can get a starting job at the start of the season next year and hit 30 or 40? Who knows.
