2009 Allen and Ginter Baseball Highlights Sketch Cards 1-25

IT'S DONE!!! Please refer to the previous post for the back-story on this one. Pressed for time and late for work, as always… In its entirety, here is the (finally) complete 2009 Allen & Ginter, Baseball Highlights, Kong Sketch cards, set. Cards #ed AGHS1-AGHS25 will follow. Thanks to everyone who helped me finish these, they are going in the binder manana!
Aaron Boone. The highlight is a walk-off homerun in the 2003 ALCS, why it’s in this 2009 set is a mystery to me… Maybe I just hate seeing Boone in a Yankees uniform...
Ken Griffey Juniors 600th homerun. He was the Willie Mays of his generation and he hit #600 while playing for the Reds on June 9, 2008.
Randy Johnson’s perfect game. This was a big highlight, but again, it was in 2004! Still, the Big Unit, in his prime, was a sight to behold...
Carlos Zambrano’s no hitter. It was the Cubs first no-hitter in 36 years. Zambrano blanked the Astros 5-0 on September 14, 2008. This card was the final piece to the puzzle...
Josh Hamilton plays homerun derby. He didn’t win the Derby, but I guess it was a highlight…
Josh Beckett is the World Series MVP! Back in 2003 with the Fish, how is this significant to this set?
Manny Ramirez hits his 500th homerun on May 31, 2008. The artist forgot to add the needle sticking out of his vein.
Derek Jeter catches a foul pop up in 2004. Why?
Frank Thomas, the Big Hurt hits his 500th homerun on June 28, 2007.
Jim Thome hits his 500th homerun on September 16, 2007. I would have rather had a new picture that celebrated his 550th that he hit this year!
Francisco Rodriguez breaks the saves record in 2008. I prefer Bobby Thigpen, but K-Rod finished with 62 that year.
The New York Yankees say farewell to Yankee Stadium. I hate the Yankees, but this sketch is very well-done, I like it. It’s timely also, as the final game was on September 21, 2008. My Grandma Phil took me to quite a few games at Yankee Stadium and she didn’t mind that I always cheered against them. Screaming Yankees Suck as a 10-year-old with my Grandmother seemed SO cool at the time...
David Wright hits his first walk-off homerun on August 7, 2008. This could be a subset all its own, but why does Wright get a card and not the 100 other guys who hit their first walk-off?
Ichiro hits an inside the park home run at the All Star Game in 2007.
Jon Lester’s first complete game of his career is a no-hitter on May 19, 2008.
Alex Rodriguez hits his 500th career home run on August 4, 2007. Again, where is the needle?
Chipper Jones hits his 400th homerun on June 5, 2008 moving him into 3rd place All-Time for homeruns for a switch hitter.
Derek Jeter is Mr. November. That’s nice, but did the Yankees make the playoffs last year?
Albert Pujols hits a game winning homer in the 2005 NLCS.
CC Sabathia pitches the Brewers into the Playoffs in 2008.
David Price shuts down the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS in 2008. Nothing bad to say about this one!
Ken Griffey Jr. scores winning run in the 1995 ALDS. That was an amazing game, I remember it like it was yesterday, but it WASN’T!
Brad Lidge blows 11 saves, oh wait, that’s this year… Brad Lidge saves the day in Game 5 of the World Series, Phillies win.
Mariano Rivera needs a hug. He closed out three World Series, 98, 99 and 2000.
Evan Longoria homers six times in the playoffs, two shy of the MLB record.
There ya have it, I still love the look of the set, but I never really read the backs up until now. Odd selection of highlights, but pretty cards…I hope that my commentary didn't ruin the experience for everyone, but highlights from 1995? Really? I think the 2008 season had plenty highlights enough to fill a 25-card subset. I'm just saying... I am psyched to have this one done, though and I still love the look of them. Kong can sketch! More trades will be posted tomorrow, very late for work now...Go Rays! Troll out.

  1. 1 Red, 1 Diamondback, 1 Cub, 1 Ranger, 1 Marlin, 1 Angel, 1 Phillie, 1 Brewer, 1 Cardinal, 1 Brave, 1 Met, 1 White Sox, 1 Blue Jay.

    2 Rays, 2 Red Sox, 2 Mariners.

    6 YANKEES.

    No Dodgers!

This is the big reason why I am collecting A&G, but not this insert set.

  2. Night Owl pretty much summed it up why I gave up on this set. Too many yankee moments.

Thank you though for posting all of the set. I have not seen several of these, including the Lester no-hitter. I had no idea that card even existed. That is a total goosebump moment for me and I will have to search for that card.

Congrats. Its always fun to shut the door on a set.

  3. JDs DAD. I have the Lester card set aside for ya. Next package I sent you I will include that with it. I agree with Night Owl, but like I said-there were plenty of Highlights from plenty of teams in 2008, why go to 1995 and 2001? The Phils won the WS and they have only 1 highlight? The Yankees finish third and they have 6? Come on.
